Power Integrations launches new 900V InnoSwitch-EP IC for industrial and three-phase power applications

The switching power supply IC meets safety requirements and can operate normally during input surges and voltage swells


San Jose, California, USA, March 22, 2016—Power Integrations, Inc. (Nasdaq: POWI), an industry leader in high-voltage integrated circuits dedicated to energy-efficient power conversion, today released 900 V constant voltage/constant current offline flyback switching IC device adds a new member to the InnoSwitch™-EP product series. The new devices are suitable for industrial control, motor drives, instrumentation and renewable energy applications powered by high-voltage DC or three-phase power, as well as standard grid voltage applications that require continuous operation of the power supply during input surges and voltage swells. The power supply achieved by the 900 V InnoSwitch-EPIC is very efficient, typically reaching 85% in a dual-output 18 W design, which not only eliminates the need for heat sinks, but also enables the design of highly compact power supplies.

They may need to use a few milliwatts of power to power a low-voltage microprocessor system, or use tens of watts of power to power an inverter gate driver. Our newly launched 900 V InnoSwitch-EP device can greatly simplify the power supply design for common industrial voltage supply ranges, making the power supply rugged and highly reliable."


Power Integrations' InnoSwitch-EP IC product series was released last year. It uses the company's innovative Fluxlink™ magnetic coupling technology that meets safety requirements, and integrates synchronous rectification and precise secondary-side control. Therefore, a very high-efficiency and high-reliability power supply can be designed without the need for an optocoupler. The new 900 V InnoSwitch-EPIC integrates a more powerful 900 V power MOSFET, which can provide a large operating voltage margin in 450 VAC industrial system applications, thus improving reliability and service life. The new device can operate continuously at input voltages up to 450VAC. In addition, input undervoltage/overvoltage protection – as another layer of protection that can be set manually, prevents the IC from switching when the input voltage rises to 650VAC, thus protecting the entire circuit. This flexibility is a huge advantage for designers who need their power supplies to be suitable for global applications.


The 900 V InnoSwitch-EPIC enhances power supply reliability by reducing BOM component count and eliminating optocouplers whose performance degrades over time. Power supply designs using this new device can exceed the energy efficiency requirements of all international energy efficiency standards, such as ENERGY STAR®, California Energy Commission standards, EU Code of Conduct (CoC), ErP Directive and US Department of Energy standards. They have passed UL1577 and TUV (EN60950) safety certification and comply with EN61000-4-8 (100 A/m) and EN61000-4-9 (1000 A/m) standards.
